Graphics can make a huge impact for your brand as a blogger. When I first started developing my brand, I became obsessed with Canva and creating cute graphics for my blog. I had an idea in my head of how I wanted my blog to look. A lot of the popular bloggers I followed had beautiful blogs with beautiful graphics, and I wanted to recreate that same beautiful look for my blog. So why did I stop creating graphics? Well, here are a few reasons:
I was spending too much time creating graphics and not enough time writing.
My blog posts began to suffer because I spent so much time trying to create the right look for my Pinterest and blog post title graphics. Once I settled on a look for my blog post titles, I could change the text and background color and voila, it was done. But Pinterest was a different story. I never really settled on anything that looked cohesive. Plus, once I rebranded my blog, none of my Pinterest graphics looked remotely like my actual website, so I ended up deleting them. But they will return once I get a better handle on how to best use Pinterest.
A photo is much more effective than a graphic.
Photos are eye-catching, and graphics can be if they are beside other graphics (like on Pinterest). But a photo will usually beat a graphic when it comes to grabbing someone’s attention. I felt like I would much rather have featured photos for my blog posts, rather than graphics that repeated the title for my posts. They seemed completely redundant to me. After spending a lot of time creating something, you don’t want it to feel pointless. I am happier with the look and feel of my blog now with the increase in photos for blog posts. For the most part, I use the same filter on each photo, to create a cohesive feeling between posts.
Creating graphics constantly led me to rethink my brand constantly.
After a while, I just needed to stick with something. I’m sure I will rebrand my blog again in the future, but for now, I am happy with how it looks. Creating graphics made me question the look of my blog. They also gave me another thing to worry about. As a new blogger, it’s so easy to play the comparison game. We compare our brand new blogs to blogs that have been up and running for years. That doesn’t make sense. And creating Pinterest graphics especially led to the comparison game. There are so many different ways to create a Pinterest graphic. But ultimately, I felt like mine weren’t very attention grabbing.
My Pinterest graphics weren’t leading to increased traffic on my blog.
After all that work, I was getting little to no reward from Pinterest. In fact, I lost followers. I revamped my entire account, creating blog-related boards and making non-blog related boards secret. I edited my Pinterest bio to be more brand-focused and went out of my way to pin blog-related pins to fill up my boards. Yet I wasn’t gaining any new followers or even anyone repinning my stuff. So I went back to basics, and am using Pinterest how I had used it before: mostly for personal use. I still have a few blog-related boards, but most all my other boards are public. I just felt like I shouldn’t have to sacrifice my other interests to promote my blog. Once I gain more organic followers on my blog, then I feel like my Pinterest will be much more effective.
Graphics can gradually change over time and you will have to backtrack to make sure they are all cohesive.
If you make any changes to your graphics later on, it would look odd to have older graphics that look completely different. After rebranding my blog, I had already backtracked and recreated old graphics, and I did not want to have to do that again. ‘Nuff said.
At the end of the day, my blog is much more important to me than my brand.
As a new blogger, I think it’s much more important to write and post consistently to get a groove going, than to get caught up crafting your brand. Once you have a better vision for your blog, then building your brand will be much easier for you. We already have so much we need to worry about: building a social media following, finding or shooting photos, joining Facebook groups and other blogging communities, etc. It’s OK to lessen to load a little bit and focus on the basics first before tackling your brand.
